Couples Therapy for Trauma
with
Kia Gutierrez, LMFTA
Guiding couples as they heal wounds, rebuild trust, and learn to feel safe with each other again.
You’ve tried to fix things on your own, but grief, loss, affairs, childhood trauma, anxiety, or depression keep surfacing. You’re not alone. Whether the wounds come from the past or from within your relationship, unresolved trauma can quietly block intimacy and make real communication feel impossible. It can look like:
Constant arguing that never resolves
Feeling alone instead of safe with your partner
Walking on eggshells or shutting down
But this doesn’t have to define your future together.
How Couples Therapy for Trauma is Different
Deeper Work
Unlike traditional couples therapy, this approach looks beneath the surface. We explore how past experiences—both individual and shared—are shaping the struggles you face today.
Emotion + Logic
Instead of focusing only on changing behaviors, we assume that if you could simply “try harder,” you already would have. Together, we process the emotions and wounds that keep you stuck, so you organically move past the barriers holding your relationship back.
Equal Voice
At every step, the priority is emotional safety—making sure both partners feel truly seen, heard, and secure.
Helping couples heal with 8 years of trauma recovery work and training in “The Body Keeps the Score” approach
I’m Kia Gutiérrez, LMFTA, specializing in trauma and marriage. I bring eight years of hands-on experience working in the trauma recovery field, including international non-profits focused on walking alongside individuals and families healing from deep wounds.
I trained in trauma therapy through the Trauma Research Foundation, led by Dr. Bessel van der Kolk, author of The Body Keeps the Score. This combination of global fieldwork and advanced clinical training shapes the way I work with couples—honoring both the science of trauma and the lived experience of partners who want to feel safe with each other again.
I offer a Christian Worldview at request and am available for telehealth sessions across Washington State, making it easier to access support from the comfort and privacy of your own space.
Limited openings for New Couples.
Easy Onboarding
Step 1: Free Consultation Call
We’ll start with a no-pressure, 15-minute phone call. During this time, we’ll walk through pricing, scheduling, and make sure we’re a good working match. This is your chance to ask questions and get a feel for how I work.
Step 2: Intake
Next, we dive into a structured intake process to get a full picture of your relationship. This includes two individual sessions, two couple sessions, and a complete Gottman Assessment. Together, we’ll clarify your goals for therapy and create a strategy tailored to your needs.
Step 3: Experience Change
With your custom goals in focus, we’ll begin the therapy journey. This isn’t about memorizing techniques—it’s about entering into conversations and emotions together in a safe space. The way you connect, communicate, and care for each other shifts in real time, leading to lasting transformation.
